Fans of Golden Bachelorette loved that leading lady Joan Vassos hosted a ‘Senior Prom’ for her first group date, but they were quickly caught off guard by an unexpected somber moment.
Gary, Bob, Jonathan, Charles L., Mark, Jordan, Guy and Keith went on the group date, and fans gushed how ‘adorable’ and ‘wholesome’ the men were.
While the date was uplighting and lighthearted, Charles L. sat alone at one point and couldn’t help but think of his late wife before opening up to Joan.
He said in an on-camera interview that he felt “isolated” at prom because of his wife’s death.
“You have to allow yourself to be happy,” Joan told Charles after he shared his feelings with her.

Charles L. wanted to try, saying: “Today is the first happiest day with me since my wife passed away.”
He has been a fan favorite since the premiere last week simply because of his sweet and soft spoken nature.
After seeing Charles sitting alone at the prom and looking sad, fans took to X, formerly Twitter, to express their opinions, with one person writing: “I hope Charles is able to join in on the fun at prom. Understandable that he still reserved.”
Another added along with a picture of a man crying: “did they REALLY have to highlight Charles sitting all alone at the prom???”
A third fumed at ABC and the show for putting Charles through it: “‘Sometimes I just shut down because of the sadness and sorrow’ ABC STOP PLAYING WITH CHARLES RIGHT NOW!!!!!!”
A fourth simply wrote: “We are all Charles” as a fifth said: “Charles on the bleachers” next to a cat shaking.

Overall, though, fans loved the “wholesome” group date, with one Golden Bachelorette fan writing: “All the guys look so cute in their prom outfits!”
“A prom group date is SO wholesome. I may cry right now,” another said.
At the end of the group date, Joan named Jonathan — who didn’t go to his own prom because the girl he asked rejected him — Prom King, and that earned him a private dinner with Joan.
